Non-Public & Charter Schools

Non-Public Schools:

  • The Office of Religious and Independent School Support (ORISS)Ìýis the NYSED office that has the primary responsibility of assisting New York State’s religious and independent schools to support their students. ORISS provides technical assistance in the areas of school start-up, operations, high school registration, professional development, substantial equivalency, and funding opportunities. Office of Facilities Planning does not have jurisdiction over religious and independent schools.

Charter Schools:

  • Pursuant to Section 2853 of the °µÍøTV Law, as amended by L 2010, Ch 101, any charter school located outside of New York City, which is chartered after July 31, 2010, falls under the jurisdiction of the °µÍøTV (NYSED) Office of Facilities Planning (OFP). Charter schools which fall under this jurisdiction must obtain a Certificate of Occupancy (CO) from OFP for any facility the school intends to occupy, whether permanently or temporarily, and whether by purchase or by lease. In order to better assist charter schools that fall under this jurisdiction, the Office of Facilities Planning has published its Charter School Handbook as a resource and guide.
